SUMMARY:The Keys to Low-Threshold Housing
DESCRIPTION:On April 7th\, 2022 the RIZE Massachusetts Foundation\, the National Harm Reduction Coalition\, and the Kraft Center for Community Health at MGH\, came together for the second in a series of learning communities focused on safe housing and harm reduction practices. For this second learning community\, The Keys to Low-Threshold Housing\, we heard from peers across the country about partnerships and approaches they have developed to save lives and keep people housed. \nLaura Guzman\, JD\, of The DOPE Project and Andrew Spiers\, LSW\, of Pathways to Housing\, participated in a discussion moderated by Emma Roberts of the National Harm Reduction Coalition. They shared replicable best practices focused on person-centered approaches that build trust and autonomy\, with an emphasis on how best to support people who use drugs. They also addressed topics raised by learning community participants. \nParticipants in this 2-hour event: \n\nLearned replicable best practices for low-threshold housing\nExplored how to identify and foster the right partners and approaches for deeper collaboration between harm reduction and housing programs\nLearned about resident rights and explore opportunities for harm reduction\n\nThe Keys to Low-Threshold Housing explored how harm reduction and housing providers can partner to better serve people with substance use disorders. SUMMARY:Your Rights In Recovery: A Toolkit
DESCRIPTION:Pathways to recovery are difficult to navigate and can be fraught with misinformation\, stigma\, and injustice. But\, there are laws and policies to protect people seeking treatment or engaged in treatment. RIZE Massachusetts\, in partnership with Health Resources in Action (HRiA) and the MA Organization for Addiction and Recovery (MOAR)\, has launched a “Know Your Rights” toolkit designed for people who may not have access to the right supports – often through no fault of their own – to manage their opioid use disorder and begin to recover on their own terms. \nYour Rights in Recovery was developed through RIZE’s Together in Recovery: Supporting Informed Decisions initiative. The Together in Recovery Advisory Committee\, comprised of advocates\, clinicians\, public officials\, and people with lived experience\, helped create the toolkit to improve support and provide unbiased information for individuals with opioid use disorder and their allies. It is accessible online\, easily printable\, and available in English and Spanish. \nThe webinar included remarks by Attorney General Maura Healy\, stories from people in recovery\, and a brief demonstration on how to use the toolkit. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \\n \n Event Agenda\n Agenda_FINAL

SUMMARY:COVID Positive and on the Street: Providing Care to People Experiencing Homelessness During a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:People experiencing homelessness (PEH) have a higher risk of contracting COVID-19 as well as higher rates of substance use disorders and serious mental health challenges\, which makes treating COVID-19 infections especially difficult. Anxious about the health and safety of their patients\, not knowing much about the disease\, and racing against the clock\, Massachusetts healthcare providers created several innovative models to care for PEH during the global pandemic. Their dedication and collaborative spirit created safe spaces\, slowed the spread\, and saved lives. \nFor example\, Boston Medical Center responded by establishing a COVID Recuperation Unit – a respite facility for PEH and infected with COVID-19. Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program used a parking lot to erect isolation and quarantine tents with a total of 36 beds (16 isolation\, 20 quarantine) for their patients. The commonwealth established isolation and recovery sites in hotels to house those infected with COVID-19 who didn’t need hospitalization but had nowhere else to go. \nTo highlight these programs\, RIZE Massachusetts Foundation hosted a panel discussion with some of these public health heroes\, moderated by Dr. Sarah Wakeman of the Substance Use Disorders Initiative at Massachusetts General Hospital. The panel included Dr. Miriam Komaromy of the Grayken Center at Boston Medical Center\, Dr. Denise De Las Nueces of Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program’s McInnis House\, and Dr. Traci Green of The Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \\n \n Event Agenda\n PDF \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \\n \n PANELIST BIOGRAPHIES\n PDF     \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \\n \n Webinar Slides\n PDF
